PRINCIPLES OF A GOOD GROWING MEDIUM
The choice of the proper growing medium is a very important factor if we want optimum conditions for plant growth. The growing medium must do several things including support for the plants and appropriate distribution of air. Roots need oxygen and respire other gasses such as carbon dioxide so it is very important that there is plenty of air to the roots. A good growing medium will allow maximum water availability to the roots, must drain well and have good nutrient holding characteristics as well as not break down quickly over time. The best growing medium we have ever used by far is Coco Peat. We have used Coco Peat in large commercial greenhouses for commercial Tomato, Cucumber and Pepper production as well as for Herbs and Ornamentals and it is an outstanding growing medium hands down. Coco peat works great as an indoor growing medium with both Terraponic and Hydro culture. It can be used alone or with an organic mix. It works great either way and we highly recommend the use of Coco Peat as the number one growing medium.
WHAT IS COCO PEAT? Coco-peat is made from the husk of the coconut, which is the fruit of the tree. The husk contains fiber and fine materials that constitute Coco Peat. Coco Peat is a homogenous material comprised of millions of capillary micro-sponges. Our Coco Peat and our Coco Peat Complete Organic growing Mix has a natural pH of 6.5 to 7.0 which is ideal for almost all plants. It has been enzymatic composted and aged to eliminate excess salts found in other brands of Coco Peat which can have a burning effect on some plants. We offer the best and highest quality Coco Peat on the market today.
The coconut husks from which Coco Peat is made contain natural disease preventing compounds that protect the health of tender plants. It's also highly porous and can hold up to 8 times its dry weight in water. Coco Peat is rich in natural rooting aids which help its own seed take root on dry sandy beaches even after months at sea. The spongy porous texture also promotes the rapid development of roots in hard and soft cuttings and it's ideal PH of 6.5-7.0 is favored by most plants. The sponge like properties of Coco Peat allows it to readily absorb and slowly release nutrients. This gentle yet consistent method of feeding has been shown to benefit plants over time. Nearly 98% of the Oxygen that plants require to grow is taken up by their roots. When roots are starved of Oxygen, by over watering or overly compacted soil, plant health suffers and growth becomes stunted. Tip necrosis (browning of leaf tips) is usually the first symptom of this condition.
Coco Peat exhibits an excellent balance of water to air retention which means excess water drains quickly yet it retains plenty of moisture to service the plant's needs. When used alone or blended with other growing media Coco Peat can prevent this problem by keeping thousands of pathways open for the exchange of gases and drainage of water. Its use as a growing medium outperforms any other medium used for growing vegetables, ornamentals and tree plants. Its soft structure promotes easy root penetration and healthy growth. Coco Peat also has some anti-fungal properties that help plants to get rid of soil borne diseases. It contains significant amounts of phosphorous (10-50ppm) and potassium (150-450 ppm) and inhibits pathogens like Pithium. It is a biodegradable source that degrades very slowly, can be used over and over again, and has a life of three to four years or more.
We offer Organic Coco Peat and Fox Farm Ocean Forest potting soil as the number one growing mediums for many good reasons. Ocean Forest poting soil is an excellent PH adjusted growing medium for many types of plants and contains Norwegian sea kelp, Earthworm castings, bat guano, crab meal, oyster shell and many other wonderful ingredients that makes plants flourish. Ocean Forest is by far a better quality growing medium than almost all the other general brands of potting soils found at most of the big box stores and garden centers. This very high quality potting soil can usually be found at hydroponic stores. We highly recommend it if you will be growing in a potting soil type medium. It can be mixed with some extra perlite to get your soil air ratio just right for anything you will be growing. We often mix it with one third perlite to increase the air capacity to the root system and increase the speed of drainage for plants that need a drier and more airy growing medium.
