PRINCIPLES OF ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY (PPM- EC-TDS)
Electrical conductivity (EC) or specific conductivity is a measure of a material’s ability to conduct an electrical current. When an electrical potential difference is placed across a conductor it’s movable charges flow giving rise to an electrical current. Electrical conductivity (EC) estimates the amount of total dissolved salts (TDS) or the total amount of dissolved ions in the water. This amount of electrical conductivity gives us a conductivity factor (CF) or a parts per million (PPM) scale to measure strength of a solution.
So what does all this mean? To keep it much simpler let’s say we add something to pure water which originally had a conductivity value of 0. Now we have changed the water into a solution that now has a small electrical charge in it. You can not see it with your eyes but it is there. Now we add some more of something to the solution and the electrical charge is even greater than it was before. This is called electrical conductivity- but for our purpose of growing plants let’s call it PPM for parts per million. An ingenious way of measuring the strength of a nutrient solution for plants is with a Truncheon Meter.
A Truncheon Meter measures the PPM in a solution and very accurately tells us how strong that solution is with flashing LED lights. By just dipping the Truncheon into the solution it reads the electrical current in the solution and the strength of that current makes the appropriate lights light up. The more nutrient we add to the solution the higher the reading on the Truncheon Meter. This is a very accurate way of telling us what we are doing with our solutions as different plants need different strengths of solutions for optimum growth. Young plants need lower solution strengths and mature plants need higher solution strengths. You can write what you did down on paper and keep a record of exactly how to do it again later.
The Truncheon meter tells us exactly what we are doing each and every time. It is the best and most accurate way of checking PPM we have ever seen. The Truncheon Meter we offer is the simplest and most accurate tool ever devised for quickly checking and adjusting your nutrient solutions. TRUNCHEON METER
For great results with your growing check our TDS table below. The smaller number would be for young plants and the larger number would be for mature plants. You can use what would be a middle range between the two numbers for half grown plants. Keeping your nutrient solution at the right concentration is important for maintaining optimum growth.
